Are You Or Your Elderly Parents Moving To An Apartment

Posted by Alfred Lancer on Aug-31-2010

So you’re moving to an apartment, what do you do with all your favorite things you can’t live without? Are your parents elderly and you’re downsizing them? Sure you can’t take everything, but you probably can manage your/their most valued pieces.

Admit it. We all have items that are precious to us and must be in the interior of our homes to make it home! Lets say Grandmas “chamber pot”..ok….maybe not that. But something. First decide what you’re able to afford as far as rent or mortgage. Then do an inventory of all things you wish to keep with you. If your a pack rat…well…nows the time to go Cold Turkey and toss out some stuff…yard sale the good stuff…and save the best stuff for your new domain.

Now, try to shop around and see how much space you can get for your buck. The bigger… the more you get to take with you. If you can afford the den or the extra room…take it! Perhaps you can sacrifice indoor space for a small yard to garden or tinker in.

Ok, I know you will be taking the major elements with you (like the couch and coffee table, kitchen table and bedroom furnishings). Keep this in mind when looking at your new space. Take measurements with you. Don’t assume it will fit. Measure the item length and width, height as well if needed. If your older and need assitance ask one of your children or grandchildren to help you.

As you put the major elements into your new space, this is your chance to be a interior decorator yourself. Put the biggest pieces in first and on the biggest walls. Then bring in the small must have items ( coffee and end tables, lamps and so on) Now just because you are used to things a certain way…break out of the box…or cycle, and change it up some. Move things around this way and that way. Which looks better?

When accessorizing the room, group things together that match or would normally be seen together. Say you collect old radios and they are here and there. Bring them together in one room…now arrange them to complement each other on a bookcase or shelf. Same with anything that you find collectable…dolls…trains…or if your brave enough glass things!

Now for the walls. Perhaps you can turn some loved things into wall decor. Put small things together in a shadowbox. Before hanging anything arrange it on the floor or bed and see if it works together. Play around with it and be sure you want it where you put it. Measure from the ceiling to the desired height of the hanging area. This works great for pictures that need to be even horizontally. Space evenly to keep it uniform.

Decorate For Love – Valentine’s Day Decor

Posted by Abbie Osborne-Wilson on Aug-27-2010

Fourteenth day of February – the most romantic day of the year. Sweethearts abound, love is in the air and romance is rekindled. On one hand, traffic is terrible, restaurants are booked and everything becomes expensive. But never mind my cynical side. Valentine’s Day is a special occasion where declarations of love are expressed in many ways. Let’s forget about exclusive restaurants and extravagant cruise for a while. For now, let’s talk about romance at home.

Adorning your home sweet home with Valentine’s Day decors is a nice idea. Decorations aren’t only for the department stores. Make yours different though. Spice it up with sensuality instead of the usual wholesome decors we see outdoors. Decorate with things that exude romance with fire. Go for sensuous aromas (sexy!), deep colors (romantic!) and satin and silk fabrics (need I say more?).

Satins and silks and known globally as some of the most sensual textiles in the business. Not only do they have a glossy look, but they also feel amazing against the skin. Satin sheets are wonderful for sleeping on, but they also make glorious impromptu picnic “blankets” that you can set down in front of the fire place. Have your delicious dinner and then snuggle on your satin area rug for a little after dinner “dessert”.

Colors are reflections of feelings, and we never see more colors than on occasions like Valentine’s Day. Red is ubiquitous on this heart’s day but other deep colors in purples and pinks also show love in the air. Make use of these colors in your home decorations.

Believe it or not, what your house smells like can make or break a romantic interlude. Yes, there are dozens of different brands of plug-in fragrances, but what you want is something a little more potent. If you want your house to smell like chocolate, slowly melt some chocolate in a pot on your stove. Not only does that create the delicious smell of chocolate in the house, you also have some pre-melted chocolate to go with that after dinner “dessert”. Fresh flowers also create a tantalizing aroma in any home. Buy 2 dozen roses, keep one to give to your sweetie and divest the other dozen of their petals. Spread the petals throughout the home to create a fresh scent that is sure to please.

Now that you’ve set the mood for a lovely Valentine’s Day at home, it’s time for the final number. No, not THAT. Not yet anyway. I’m actually talking about preparing for THAT. Create an opportunity for much snuggling and canoodling. Turn down the heat and make your place a bit chilly for some warm-giving sweet moments. Not the shivering to the bone kind of cold. That will end the night for you guys. Adjust the temperature for the cool kind where holding hands becomes sweet. I’m sure you know that it’s so much nicer to hug, kiss and snuggle when the temperature is low. It makes for a really good main event.

Valentine’s Day is much more than the presents. The effort that goes with making the day special is what counts. Creating loving memories, especially in your home will bring you more smiles in the years to come. Don’t limit yourself to sensual home decors for Valentine’s Day or anniversaries only. If you can, make each day a sensual, romantic day just like Valentine’s Day. Who cares if it’s always February– in your house calendar? I don’t.

Rug decorating has never been so easy with these heart shaped colored area rugs.

How To Improve Your Home?

Posted by Elizabeth Ellis on Aug-12-2010

The truth lies behind the best house gift is the likings and taste of the new house owner who steps into his sweet home. It should be clear to you what things he is very much fond of. The gift should be attached with the sentiment of owning a new house.

You have to see what kind of relation you share with him, to whom you will gift. The gift would be of other quality if he holds a close affinity with you. You will simply buy a less valuable gift for your colleague who is not so close to you. It does not mean that an expensive gift would be the best gift. If you afford to buy a valuable gift, then go for it. Otherwise, a small gift would be absolutely fine. Every thing depends on the love you shower on him.

House warming gifts are very touchy. You can see smile on the lips of the new house owner if you gift him useful and decorative pieces. You can purchase decorative wall clock, beautiful show piece, and exclusive wall hanging and vase full of scented flowers. Candle stand made up of copper, brass and wrought iron are also nice gifts. You can present wind chimes, lucky charms and bells to whom who believe in feng shui.

Antique Art Deco light which can be found in various designs.

Kitchen equipments are necessary items to decorate your beautiful kitchen. Dinner sets especially plates, glass and cup sets, and decorative storage containers like Tupperware, microwaves, toaster, and salt and pepper shakers are good gift items. Baskets full of foods, like chips, cookies, chocolates are good gifts for a food junky.

Whatever may be the price, the warmth and love of the giver makes it more precious to the owner of the house. You have to haunt around the market before buying a perfect gift. You can easily forget the past memories of the old house.

Decorating One’s Home

If you think you know for sure the color you will be using in your next home improvement plan, then think again. Take a look at the following advices that can provide a few ideas when changing your interior colors.

1. Do your walls look old and boring? When choosing a paint color, test it first on a small object, you can watch then from different positions and during different times of the day. You will be amazed how different that paint stain looks in natural and artificial light. Also, you can test how profound the color will be, by applies numerous layers onto that object.

2. What people usually do is to paint the ceiling in the lightest shade, then the walls a bit darker. Consider painting carpentry objects is the darkest tone. Paints that are based on oily colors do give the maximum effects.

3. Any carpenter can give you small samples of materials they use to make furniture form, and if they don’t you should ask for them. Colors on a computer screen or in a magazine can be quite different form the real colors you will get, so ask for sample even for carpets or sofa covers.

4. Don’t forget about the focal points, that are usually red, and can be anything, even a small object. This can be a flower vase of a dark red or even a soft toy bear placed on an armchair or a red baldwin baby grand piano.

If you think white walls are plain, think again. Of course, there are many cases in witch white walls leave the impression of a hospital room that doesn’t have anything to say, but that’s because white simply reflects the other deign aspects present there. As the white of a wedding dress can be so different from one dress to the other, so can be the white wall paint you can buy. If you’ve chosen white as your dominant color for one room, you can easily enrich the space, by adding furniture pieces in various colors. The most important thing about white is the fact that it will always be fashionable. It’s best to paint the walls in a dusty white, the ceiling white and garnish everything with dark brown carpentry objects and furniture accessories in bright colors as red, orange or cream.

Home Decorating – Bangers And Mash Style

Posted by Abbie Osborne-Wilson on Aug-3-2010

If you have been to a traditional Irish pub or to a watering hole inspired by an Irish pub, you would know that the place is extremely laidback and cordial. Everybody seems to know everybody and everyone are like friends sharing a good laugh over drinks and teasing conversation.

Decorating with an Irish pub theme is not difficult. You don’t need gallons of beer and leprechaun figurines, unless you want to (it’s actually fun to have those!). Setting the theme with the right colors, decors and materials, and you have just opened your very own Irish pub.

A quick decorating work is to change the color of the dining room. This has an instant gratification as you would be able to see the change from a formal or maybe a casual dining area into an uber fun, relaxed place of laughter, good talks and hearty meals reminiscent of an Irish night-out right after the paint job. Dark mint green is a popular color choice for many Irish pubs.

Flooring is very important to your setting. Use flooring with either a natural wood look or a stone look. The reason Irish pubs are so relaxing is because they are simple. Color palette, design, and with a natural feel is exactly what is necessary to not only continue your theme, but also lock out the world outside. By implementing the use of wood or stone in your room you draw your diners not just to the table, but to another time and place. The same is true of the accessories and furnishings you choose.

If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace in your dining room, cover the hearth in natural stone. A natural wood mantle is a must also. These will not only add to the theme of the room, but they will also look lovely while providing heat. If you do not have a fireplace consider adding a functional fireplace or building a faux fireplace that will open to double as a closet. While I am a fan of a functional fire place it is not an option for many. The closet however is equally beautiful and useful, without causing the havoc that may be involved when installing an actual fireplace.

Throw in some Irish-inspired accessories such as religious ornaments and your dining room will look and feel like a real Irish pub. You can even play some traditional Irish folk songs when holding casual parties for friends. Talk about a complete production work!

Speaking of accessories, we should not forget to include an area rug. A room’s design is not complete without this functional and decorative floor accent. The ideal area rug for an Irish pub theme is something that has green and gold in it, primary colors associated with an Irish pub. Other colors are welcome too particularly the “cooling tones.” Just make sure that they suit the other furnishings in the room. You want a well-coordinated dining room.

After you’ve decorated your dining room with an Irish pub style, invite your friends for a nice drink. Have a blast in celebrating an Irish night! Hey, maybe you can do it on a regular basisonce a week? Twice a week? Not a bad idea at all.

Keep up with current Home Design styles and enhance your home with green rugs.

Three Interior Design Elements To Remember

Posted by Abbie Osborne-Wilson on Jul-31-2010

There are hundreds of ideas for interior design but all these have common elements crucial for successful decorating. Excluding these important factors can lead to disaster. Everybody wants a home that is both attractive and practical. A home that is practical fulfills functional purposes while attractive speaks for the interiors. A place that is warm, homely and inviting are desirable qualities too that will make a home the Dream House to have.

So what are these elements vital in creating a Dream House?

The first element is functionality. This refers to how a room is used. If you want a living room spacious enough to freely entertain guests, then the furnishings should be arranged in such a way that gives more space. The entertainment system, particularly the television should be properly positioned so that everyone in the room can watch comfortably while still being able to converse well without stressing the neck, eyes and voice (well in case the living room is way too big).

Mood is also a crucial element for any interior designer because a room needs to stimulate anyone who is inside of it. Bedrooms could be more of a calming place while a kitchen should be bright and energetic. The office should inspire a person to get work done while a living room should be relaxing but still infused with a sense of calm energy. The objects which are chosen to fill these rooms can help.

Harmony – this last element sums up the first two factors. This should be the final product of the combination of functionality and mood with the right placements, furnishings and color.

Integrating all these elements bring us to one decorative item that meets functionality, mood and harmony. These are area rugs. An area rug is a floor covering that shields the flooring from stains, dents, dirt and scratches. It reflects a particular mood through the choice of a color and pattern. Lastly, it makes the room well coordinated, especially if placed at the right spot. With the right color, an area rug can bring all the decorations and furniture together.

Home Decorating experts all agree that it is essential to use area rugs. And as discussed here one of the most popular ranges is the colored area rugs.

Drapery Styles

Posted by Brian Light on Jul-28-2010

Drapes come in all shapes and sizes. They can fit a floor-to-ceiling window just as easily as they can work on smaller windows. There is an abundance of fabrics and styles to choose from. Once you’ve chosen the fabric, the next step is to figure out how you want it to be attached to the curtain rod. There are a few options including rod pocket drapery, ring top drapery, French pleat drapery and grommet drapery.

* Rod pocket drapery means the drapes or top fabric portion of the drape is wrapped over the drapery rod. There are no added accessories like clips or grommets. This style preserves the simplicity of the drape. Rods should be no more than 1 inches in diameter or they may not fit within the curtain pocket. Versions of rod pocket drapery can be found from US manufacturers or overseas manufacturers.

* Ring Top Drapery Panels with clip on rings come with a variety of choices of ring finishes to accent drapery rods and hardware. Each drapery ring accommodates drapery rods up to 1 inch in diameter. Some custom curtain panels are sewn in the USA with fullness. Liner is generally not included but is an optional upgrade.

* Ring Top Drapery is also available with sewn-in rings. The rings come sewn into the fabric for added durability and longevity. The rings, like clip-on rings can be had in either wood or metal finishes. These rings work best with curtain rods less than 1 inches around. Check widths with manufacturers before purchasing.

* French pleat drapery panels bring a European flair to any home. The tucked pleat in the front brings a quaint charm to any room. These blinds are attached with a clip on the back that hooks into a pin. The fabric appears to sit above the rod, concealing most of the rod except the ends. Decorative ends can be used to dress up the curtains.

* Grommet drapery panels have metal grommets attached at the top of the panel to mount the drapery panels to the curtain rod. Grommet Draperies offer a modern look to any home decor. Each grommet drapery accommodates up to a 1 1/2 inch drapery rod and comes in a bronze finish to accent the fabric of your choice.

Some manufacturers only sell drapery curtains sewn in the USA.

While these tend to be a little bit more expensive than window treatments shipped in from overseas, they help keep the local economy going.

Curtain rods also come in a variety of styles and finishes. Rod ends can be purchased in standard wood or bronze, or to excite things, blown art glass and ceramic ends can finish off a room nicely. Drapery styles offer privacy, protection from glare, but most importantly, they bring style to a home.

Say Hello To A New Bedroom

Posted by Abbie Osborne-Wilson on Jul-25-2010

As you plan your home redecorating project, don’t forget to include your bedroom. Often, homeowners focus on the living room, den or entertainment room, dining room and kitchen. Bedrooms, particularly their own, belong to the pending category.

The bedroom is our refuge from the busy life we lead outside. It must follow then that this space should be comforting, relaxing and rejuvenating. But how often do we see bedrooms in disarray? If you see a neat bedroom, try checking under the bed and opening the closet. If no clothes tumble out and no foreign objects are stacked underneath, then it is indeed a clean bedroom.

It’s understandable that you would prefer to invest in visible rooms in the house. However, decorating your bedroom doesn’t have to be expensive and can work out well even if you have a limited budget. That’s why, it’s important to allot and decide a budget for your bedroom decorating. From here, you can decide which items to buy and which to forgo so you won’t rip your savings apart.

Choose a theme for your bedroom. It can be uniform with the rest of the house or a different one. For example, your home design theme is country, you can apply the same design to your room.

Change the color if you are implementing a 360-turn in theme. If not, an accent shade or some painted artworks on the walls will do. An option is to repaint the main wall, which is one behind the headboard. It will be enough to attract attention and serve as a highlight.

Decorations don’t have to be branded labels either. Simple items like fresh flowers and a potted plant can do wonders.

An area rug positioned in the center of the bedroom is a focal piece. It will make your room more appealing, especially if its color is bright or the patterns big. Smaller rugs can also be placed beside the bed or at the foot of the bed and by the door. The good news, area rugs are available in affordable prices.

Rearrange your furniture, especially if you’re lacking in space. Choose things that should go and those that should be replaced in design, material or color. A chair for instance will look brand new with a fresh upholstery or cushion. You can polish or repaint the cabinets and drawers for more “new” furniture in your bedroom.

Make the best use of storage. This will prevent clutter and will make the room look bigger. There are ottomans that double up as compartments. You can also have a customized shelf added to one side of the wall to keep your extra books and other knick-knacks.

Space and storage issues can be resolved by getting some of those storage units that slide under the bed. Aside from getting all the clutter out of the way, they’re a convenient way to store clothing for another season or linens that aren’t being used.

There are numerous ways to redecorate your personal refuge without endangering your bank account. It just takes a little patience and creativity. After all, what would be better than beginning and ending each day in your own personally designed sanctuary?

If you found this information about Bedroom Decorating useful, then you are bound to adore these transitional print rugs.

Surfing Decor – For The Hippest Child In The Neighborhood

Posted by Rebecca McKeich on Jul-12-2010

If your kid is sick of his or her room looking like everyone else’s with the same old cartoon characters or superheroes, then it is time for a whole new look. Add some fun to their life by turning their room into something their friends will envy with beach and surf decorating.

You will of course need a surfboard or two; you can’t have a surfing theme without one. You can find used ones that are cheap at local surf shops or flea markets. Make a shelf on the wall with one with a few brackets or turn an old desk into something fun by replacing the top with a surfboard. If your child is a surfer, hang their board on the wall for when they are not using it and in the off season it decorates the room.

With some blue and white paint, you can turn those plain walls into crashing waves. Start with a nice blue on the walls and then using a paintbrush and the white paint, create the waves with big sweeping strokes of the brush. You could even overlap it to go onto the ceiling. If painting is not your strong point, using the rag painting method can give a similar effect with some smaller waves. Some white curtains that are airy and light will complement the colors of the walls.

If you have some beach towels lying around, they are not only the perfect touch but can add the right amount of color. Hang these on the walls or even use one to reupholster a small chair or desk chair in your kid’s room.

For a great old school surfer decor vibe, look for some signs to hang on the walls, maybe even the door. Online or in the local surf shops you’ll be able to find a lot of vintage beach signs if your child prefers those to the newer styles today. If your kid loves posters, a poster or two of a surfing scene or the beach will dress up the walls too.

Looking at some online sites you’ll find a lot of different kinds of novelty items that would fit right into the surf theme. Little surfboard wall hooks for coats and hats, surfboard printed light switch plates, even wall clocks in the shape of a surfboard will add a fun touch to the room. Let your child take a look at what they think will look cool and pick out a few pieces of their own.

And nothing pulls a room completely together like the right bedding. Today, bedding is all about design and you’ll find a variety of different choices when it comes to surfing and the beach. There will be flashy colorful ocean scenes to subtle and calming beach scenes to choose from.

Kids love summer and summer vacation, and when you think of summer you think of the beach home decorating. Even if your kid isn’t a surfer you can still transform their ordinary room into something spectacular with the right pieces of surfboard decorations that will make them feel like they are at the beach every day.
