Furniture cleaning is one of the inevitable house keeping tasks, which has to be performed on daily basis. We dust and wipe our wooden furniture pieces every day, but only few of us know how many excellent recommendations we could use for better furniture cleaning and maintenance and for prolonging its ‘life’ in our homes. Let us take a look at some of those things here.
Use Relevant Search Phrases
If you are looking for something in particular, such as a TV stand, you want to search. Browsing Craigslist will take too long, as there are hundreds of home furniture pieces listed for sale on the website. When searching though, you must choose your phrases wisely. You don’t want to mistakenly miss a good deal. Always check your spelling and then try different name variations. For example, some Craigslist sellers label their sofa as a couch and visa versa.
First of all, there are various types of wicker, like cane and rattan, some of which are heartier than others. For example, one type of wicker called paper fiber should never get even the slightest bit wet or it will fall apart. To avoid this problem altogether, you can also get a pretty good wicker replica made out of resin. They’re better for outdoor use but lack the elegant charm of real wicker.
If you want to maintain your polished furniture always shining and make it a bit dust repellent, once in a while you may cover it with a mixture of 3 measures of turpentine, 2 measures of stearic acid and a bit of colouring agent fitting your furniture color. You rub it in with a flannel, leave it on for 2 hours and then rub your furniture up with a soft cloth until it shines. Such shine will stay on for weeks.
If you got an oak or chestnut furniture and you want to get rid off small scratches on it, you should cover it with a light iodine solution, using a small brush.
Oak furniture cleaning can be easily and effectively done using warm beer. If you want it to shine, you may rub it with the following mixture: one glassful of beer, one tea spoon of sugar and a piece of wax.
Finishes
As part of the special care that wicker requires, you should check the condition of your chairs once a year. It’s easiest to do at the beginning of summer or whenever you take your furniture out of winter storage. If the varnish is peeling, you will need to recoat the entire piece. Sand it down and clean it first so that the finish sticks better; adding a fresh coat of varnish will not only protect the wicker, but will keep it looking newer. If, on the other hand your wicker chairs are painted, you may need to add another coat. In this case, spray on paints work well to cover the many nooks throughout the woven fibers. After that you may opt for a thin coat of liquid furniture on top of your finish to add to the overall gloss of your furniture.
